Heres the story
Went to fill SME up with petrol last night - Accumate said battery fully charged - Had to jump start her
Filled Up
This morning she started on the button
Rode about 18 miles thought I would stop and check the bike over, switched her off - no power to restart
Breakdown truck jump started her
Ran 7 miles or so to Jacks Hill
About 2 hours later she started on the button
Rode 25 miles home - stopped outside to unlock gates
Not enough power to turn her over and restart
30 mins later seems to turn over engine
My diagnosis is Knackered Battery - anyone disagree
PS put on accumate battery is charging

what type of battery is it pete? I'd try jumping the starter solenoid terminals with a suitable screwdriver when you cant get anything off the button, might narrow down the issue a bit?

that probably blows my theory , it was often said about lead acid batteries that 'a good one will charge itself' which seems to be true (when they are new) not so sure about gel, not enough experience of them

Just been to Halford’s to pick up new Yuasa battery
Got it home and opened it
Dated commissioned 05/2019, half empty of electrolyte, v CX orrosion on the terminals
Took it back
Store manager told me it was on clearance as they have no demand

Halfrauds, take it back, get your money back.
Lead acid batteries will "recover" somewhat if given some time, but if they are flat, discharged, then they are flat and discharged.
When yours is fully charged, do a charging system check.
Halfrauds and other places will do a free battery check...
If the battery is fully charged and in good condition, an the engine does not turn over on the button, check starting system, which as you know is a bit involved on sd's and even more involved in more modern bikes and cars....
Gone are the days of simple stuff....

Halfords manager talking b*ll*cks! I was down there this afternoon and they are on the shelf at £47, not on clearance and not marked down. Probably correct in saying there's no demand though, hence you getting an almost period one!

£47!!
I always get the cheapest, mostly from m and p, check them out as sometimes they will deliver for free...acid pack ( electrolyte ) comes in the box along with the battery.
Any chance of a cutting from the money tree in your garden ?

I wouldn't pay that either! Just like to keep an eye on what they've got as you can sometimes get a wee bargain. I got mine at the end of last year, a Numax, on ebay for £28 delivered and pre-filled from Tanya Batteries. It was sealed inside a plastic bag with a screw cap on it. Undo the cap to let the air in and then cut it out of the bag. Instructions were to charge for an hour, which I did, but it was showing fully charged after a few minutes.
Wish I did have a money tree, but then the rolling pin would be there snipping away daily. At least my wallet could have a rest then!!!

I’ve bought about 6 of those in the last six months (for different sd’s), all been good so far, but I do keep them regularly charged with my optimate.

That's good to know those are ok. I'll be in the market for one soon for the Black Pig so will get one of them. I have two oximisers bought for a fiver each with no wires to connect to the battery but I just made some up and they both work perfectly. Remember, I am a certified cheapskate!
