HI, recently got my early 400n, with kickstart. I am looking over it now and the usual thongs required...carbs clean/overhaul, fork seals etc. A couple of questions though. 1) were decals laquered in from new? 2) Did all CB400n have grab rails? 3) the pinch bolts are tight on my forks but the forks are not secure...I can twist them by holding wheels between legs and pulling bars to and fro, are there any common causes? I can see the forks moving against the mudguard. Thanks

Tank stripes yes, others no as far as I know...... 2. yes 3.? not sure, the fork cases are free to rotate, do you mean you put a marker on the stanchion and it rotated. A mark 1 escort pulled out in front of me once (whilst on a black CB250NA), and we soft impacted into her wing, the wheel was then out of line. The previous owner, who was riding pillion, kicked it back in line and off we went You could always drop the forks, but keeping the chrome cap screw three threads in, smear the stanchion round it's diameter, with a bit of hylomar blue just under the clamp and draw it back into position, it may improve friction a smidgen.. and do up your clamp bolts. I just got two, Honda clamp bolt-washers, for the lower yolk clamps on my 400 kicker, and they are scoop heads , need to find some old NOS.

With you John on the decals. Only decals on the CB250/400N's that were clear coated over from day one were the tank decals to protect from petrol spillage (not including the helmet warning decal). Grab rails agree again......although from new a buyer could request a genuine Honda rack / carrier to be installed. Some of these racks required the removal of the grab rails, especially the type that hinges up wards to allow seat removal. Welcome and enjoy the forum.

Thanks, The tank decals I know now have been replaced! Grab rails missing....probably due to the rear crash bars I do not like...but have an ok set of rails I can fit to take off the bars. Forks, I have loosened it all, pinch bolts, top bolts, wheel spindle, mudguard and then wobbled it all around and set it square. It seems fine and tight now. As said, I need to do the fork seals anyway so will drop it all soon.

A most worthy steed Sir Rusty, my advice of hit it with a hammer and then hit it again with a bigger hammer is probably not required with such a nice example, I'd like to offer more advice but alas I have troubles with a particularly vicious spider at the moment, namely Lord Frederick, this may seem utter shite to you at present, but persevere, all will become clear 🍺

yes, it is going to make a nice bike.....paint is not bad either though not mint. I want to check the cam timing, currently runs like a dog (carbs) but it also had a new cam chain done in a bikeshop recently and I always like to check other peoples work. I assume I can do so simply taking off the rocker cover and setting engine to correct position.

Regarding the forks mine did that due to the wheel spindle being worn/stretched try bunging a thicker washer on it,my issue cured by CTB kindly giving me a “new” spindle😁

I have noticed some variation in cam sprockets (very slight differences in where the marks are) but thats more down to my experiments with different cams. the marks will be very obvious if they are a tooth out, I'v actually done it deliberately to see what they look like and its very obvious.
