as long as the engine is quiet you should be ok [ providing you dont pay over the odds ] given the amount of rust i would hazard a guess its just been left outside in the elements without any interest by the owner..anyway, enjoy

Rusty frames at rear near shocks, low compression, rotten crusty seat bases, horrendous carb issues, knackered rear suspension, rotted out ex. collector box, noisy top ends....just beware that there are a lot of polished turds out there. All that glitters is NOT gold dude.
Not to put you off of course - good ones are still out there and can be affordable still.

I managed to buy it within my budget and at a price the seller was pleased with too. Just got to arrange to get it now - it’s on a different Island to me, flight there booked - ferry home booked home too

On a different island !
Where abouts in the world are you ?
Was the bike seen running ?
Hope you climate is warm and dry ?
You know of CMSNL ?
You do now.
You have a manual and a good postal service ?
If the engine was not heard running, and since your "way out there" the bikes rebirth needs to be slow and cautious !
Do not just hook up a battery and whizz the engine over !
A stuck valve, open usually, can turn a viable engine into scrap in half a second dude.
So when you get it to it's new resting place, post pictures pictures pictures.
Do not even attempt to turn the engine over ( unless it was heard running by your friend in the old owners ownership ) at all for now.
Just report back for guidence.
Study the CMSNL exploded views and understand what's in the engine.
Even old filthy dirty engine oil has its uses, living on a island, hopefully a nice warm sunny dry one.
Brakes and clutches also stick.
You say the rear wheel sprocket spigot has issues, sprocket "ring" rusted solid to the spigot?
Take your time, do your research, don't break anything, and enjoy.

I successfully travelled to the other Island and found the yard. loaded up the bike with all the spares I didn’t know I was getting thrown in and made it to the ferry ok. You guys were right about the pinholes in the tank, Managed to find 3 after a faint whiff of fuel- still it got me home ok. Good job the vendor threw in a spare tank too
