just got back from another trip to skye, prior to setting off she only started on one cylinder, then after a couple of minutes ran fine on both cylinders...then ran perfect for the first 250 miles
same thing happened when it was time to return, wouldn't fire on either cylinder, didnt have much time to fanny about, took one plug out [ warmed it with a lighter ] then she fired up, but again..only on one cylinder [ the opposite one to the outward journey ] then ran perfect for the remaining 250 miles home..
any immediate ideas as what to check first ?

I would firstly suspect the connection is poor between the plug caps, screwed into the HT lead. I would say cut 4mm off the end off the HT lead with a sharp stanley knive blade, and screw the caps back in, but only if you have sufficient length on the leads.. Not ideal as the HT leads are sealed into the coil, and not the replaceable type....

when i bought the bike last year, it only started on one cylinder, then a minute or so fired up on the 2nd, but after finally sorting out the jetting and cleaning the carbs, she always started on both cylinders, and has done for the last 6 months, so i naturally assumed it was fuel related, she lives outside, but is always under a tarp..maybe she dosnt like the Scottish highlands winter weather

the carb choke butterfly's are a bit of a weird over complicated set up, they dont seem to operate in proper unison so SD's seem to fire up on one cylinder then the other pops into life. if its swapping from one cylinder to the other I'm inclined to agree with John, it could be HT/coil area, are the roads very salty up there? a really good sluice out with good old WD40 could sort it (maybe)

as i dont have a garage/shed etc, the bike is always sprayed with wd40 [ top to bottom ] before having two tarps chucked over it, so its well oiled in that respect
my immediate thought was that it could be fuel related, as by warming the plug the bike fired straight away..but then again i did move the HT lead in the process
