panic over... when i first bought the bike, the oil filter bolt was knackered, so when i bought a new bolt, i also bought a new drain plug bolt at the same time.. however, i thought i would fit a replacement drain bolt with the magnet attatched..that was the problem, the thread length was only only 10mm, the original drain bolt is considerably longer than 10mm so thankfully, the sump casing thread has only been stripped by 10mm at the outer edge, so found [ after turning the flat upsaide down for several hours ] and fitted the original new [ longer ] bolt, and all is well again in the superdream world.. just as well really as i have a 500 mile ride out next week !

rough way to check pitch, count 10 threads and measure them with an engineers rule, then divide by 10. eg 15mm over 10 threads = 1.5mm pitch
