My recently acquired 400N seems to have a short somewhere, draining the battery.
Having recharged the battery it holds charge on the bench but when installed on the bike can be totally flattened overnight.
I am relatively OK on mechanical faults but baffled by electrics.
Is there a particularly weak point that I should look at as the first thing?

the first place I'd check is the starter solenoid, follow the main live from the battery, its not far away. ensure that those terminals are nice and clean (no corrosion between any terminals) and insulated. from there its a case of obvious stuff like taking each block connector apart and carefully cleaning any verdigris out to see if that cures it.
if you go through the electrics one by one ie switch the lights on or toot the horn etc does it dim the idiot lights? that could also be a pointer to where the problem lies

Could it be the ignition switch malfunctioning Or have you switched it to parking light rather than off

I really don’t know.
My plan of attack is to check and clean all connections as previous post, reinstall battery and see what happens, but I will certainly check where I leave the ignition switch.
Many thanks for the suggestion. I was not aware of that possibility.

I have now found that the rectifier/regulator is shot and found one wire completely broken through.
New Rectifier on order, throttle adjustment completed, (far too much free play and no adjustment left at handlebar end), chain cleaned and tensioned although new chain and sprockets will be needed in the not too distant future.
New fuel pipe to replace old cracked one fitted and general cleaning completed.
Now a full service is in order although I have found that the bolts securing the twin callipers on the front wheel are immovable. Lashings of WD40 over a few days, taking care to keep it away from discs and pads, is the order of the day.
Overall the bike is in better condition than I expected so hope to have it back on the road within the next two to three weeks.
Th@nks to all for the advise so far.

OK. A new rectifier/regulator seems to have created the problem.
